For instance, in one experiment, a specie of seabird, the Manx shearwater (Puffinus puffinus), which had never been more than 17 kilometers from home, was removed from her nest on an island off the coast of Wales, flown to Boston, Massachusetts in the United States, and then released. Later, even before the letter announcing her release reached the scientists in Wales, she was back on Wales! To perform an equivalent record, such as sailing from Boston to Wales across the Atlantic ocean, a human would have to spend hours learning to use navigation instruments to cross the ocean. A map would also be needed to find the nest on the other side. Other animals such as caribou, monarch butterflies, salamanders, and sea turtles all perform similar journeys without mechanical aids.

Scientists believe that these animals have several built-in navigation systems, including electrical currents in some species of fish and signals from sunlight in birds, which appear to fall back on the magnetic field mainly when sunlight is blocked by clouds. To prove that some species of animals indeed use Earth’s magnetic field to find their way during migration, a team of scientists conducted a research using sea turtle hatchlings, particularly the loggerhead species. Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) are known for their agility to travel long distances across the warm regions of the sea. They mostly build their nest in the southeastern part of the United States and travel hundreds of kilometers always finding their way back to the same beach to lay eggs. They spend up to 10 years swimming around the North Atlantic before returning to nest.

Headed by Kenneth Lohmann, a marine biologist at the University of North Carolina, the research seeks to prove that sea turtles determine their latitude in the Atlantic by using the magnetic field of the Earth. Lohmann believes that sea turtles may use their magnetic sense to stay within warm regions of the North Atlantic then navigate a return to their home beaches.

The turtle hatchlings were leashed in a harness which was attached to an arm in the middle of a circular tank containing seawater. The arm was connected to a computer so that the turtles could swim for hours while the computer made a continuous record of their movements. A system of coils surrounded the tank that could be used to create different magnetic fields around the turtles. The team observed that the turtles swam toward light no matter what the inclination of the magnetic field around them; so, they tested them in the dark. After varying the inclination of the magnetic field they found that at 57º inclination or less the turtles swam northeast. However, at 60º inclination, the turtles made a right angle-turn until they were swimming south.

What made the turtles go south? Studying the migratory behavior of sea turtles, particularly the loggerhead species, scientists attributed this to the sea turtles’ genetic tendency to turn south when they reach 60º. Such a turn ensures that the turtles end up with Sargasso Sea, a warm region, and not in the cold water of the cold Atlantic.

The navigation pattern of Loggerhead turtles hatching on Atlantic beaches was plotted by scientists. According to their findings, loggerhead turtles always hatch at night around the time of the full moon. They then cross the beach toward the light of the moon, which rises in the east. Upon reaching the ocean, they stop responding to light and swim directly into the waves, which keeps them swimming away from the land. The wave patterns in the sea become irregular. The turtles at some point switch from swimming into waves to swimming northeast. They could find their direction by the sun’s position during the day. However, Lohmann suspects that the turtles use their magnetic sense, which can act as compass at night as well as during the day.

When Howard Dean is the subject, it’s usually that an article writes itself. As with any mention of “Dizzy” Dean,” you can be certain that the written theme will be about an outrageous remark he made, a very public remark.

Let’s start with Dean’s most recent claim that U.S. Representative Katherine Harris and her handling of the 2000 vote recount efforts for candidates Al Gore and George Bush likened her to Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin.

Education programs in Ohio’s university system will be undergoing some new measures to gauge how well they are training their teachers of tomorrow. This will make Ohio the “first state in the nation to grade colleges on how well they train teachers to help students succeed.” There are 15 measures to be implemented, announced Chancellor Eric D. Fingerhut, which will test teachers in both public and private universities. Ohio was one of only 12 states to receive federal funding from President Obama’s “Race to the Top” plan, which boasted a .3 billion budget. About 0 million was given to Ohio, which was then split accordingly amongst all schools.

These testing measures are strikingly similar to “the state report cards of Ohio’s K-12 schools”, since they examine how much a student has learned in one year compared to the previous year. The determining factor is “teaching quality,” said Fingerhut. He continued by saying, “And so we have a moral, professional and institutional obligation to make sure the quality of teachers is as high as possible.”

The state teacher licensure exam will now have a “value-added” component, which will be reflected by the schools submitting annual data detailing how well students perform. The State Board of Education is developing this component as a function of Ohio’s “Race to the Top” plan. This data will allow administrators to track the academic growth of students individually through the years, no matter what school they attend. Another new evaluation method will “create a teacher-performance assessment that measures how well new teachers communicate with parents, structure lesson plans and manage classrooms.”

Money that was received from Obama’s education reform will be divided amongst various sectors: mentoring programs to close the gap between minority and white groups, teacher planning, and the redesign of teacher evaluations. New coalitions betweeneducation colleges and “academically struggling schools” will evolve, giving both institutions added advantages, such as extra recognition and more individual student attention and interaction.

While the first report won’t be available until the end of 2012, schools are already planning their courses for the next few years. Rob Evans, press secretary for the Ohio Board of Regents further emphasizes this fact, “We’re essentially starting from scratch, and a lot of this information isn’t even available yet.” Once benchmarks are created and distributed for each category, results can be compared and then compiled. The oft-heard complaint from many teachers is that they were not prepared well enough in college for what awaited them in the real classroom. With this, and the new evaluations, in place, it seems as if the road to reconciliation for these two disparate worlds might be just around the corner.

I really wanted to try these products.   Depth was so kind as to send me a few products to review.  I received Depth Shave Cream in Sea Berry scent, Depth Body Wash in Mangrove Citrus, and Depth hand and body lotion in Bay Coconut. 
 

Depth Body Wash in Mangrove Citrus—I just had to try them as soon as I received them. The first one I tried was the Depth Body Wash in Mangrove Citrus.  I liked that it had a pump to dispense the body wash.  The scent of the Mangrove Citrus was very natural.  It’s not as sweet smelling as many other citrus scented products I’ve tried.  It’s more like cutting into a fresh orange, that natural citrusy fragrance. The body wash lathers well with my loofah.  The body wash left me feeling clean and fresh. The bottle states that the body wash is made “with therapeutic, wild botanicals from the sea. 70% organic, 100% vegetarian, artificial color free, paraben free, SLS free, no animal testing, artificial color free, and phthalate free.” 

Depth Shave Cream in Sea Berry—Next, the shave cream in Sea Berry scent.   I have to admit I was skeptical of the performance of the shave cream when I first squeezed the small quarter sized dab onto my leg.  I spread it over my skin. If felt more like lotion for the shower. A thinner consistency.   The sea berry scent is very subtle.  If you are not one for strong scents, then this may be the scent for you to choose. After drying off from the shower, my legs felt moisturized already.  No irritation from the shave. The shave cream bottle states that it is 80% organic, 100% vegetarian, just like like the body wash.

Depth Hand and Body Lotion in Bay Coconut—Lastly, the Bay Coconut scented hand and body lotion.  This may be my favorite of all the products.  Pumping the lotion into my hand it felt like it hand a very smooth, almost gel like texture.  I used it all over.  My skin felt so smooth and moisturized.  My lower legs for whatever reason get very dry. This gave my legs a touchable, supple look. The Bay Coconut scent may be my favorite scent of all three.  All the scents I tried are natural.  Not too sweet or over-bearing. The Bay Coconut is no exception. The scent is NOT Pina-Colada-ish but rather what I imagine a fresh coconut freshly cracked open would smell like.

My review summary:  At an average cost of .99 typically I would say it was a little pricey for me.  However, the products work well, the company is environmentally proactive and a portion of the of the sales goes to Camp Sea lab.  This is worth spending a couple extra dollars on. You can feel good knowing your helping the environment and giving back.
